Duns managed to get to the finals of the Border League after fighting through a tough group and play-offs. We met Glendale in the final and the game went to the very last stone with the scores all tied up and Duns with the hammer. Unfortunately it was not to be a Glendale emerged victorious.
By way of consolation Glendale are not eligible for the province championships and so Duns as runners up will represent BIR.
A team comprised fully of Duns players also went on to win the 9:15 league. This open competition is the qualifying competition for the National Super League Finals to be played in Forfar at the start of next season.
On the domestic front the close race between George and Paul for the Autumn league title shifted in George's favour with his victory over Paul on the 20th. He consolidated this with a narrow win over John H to lie unbeaten with one game to go.
In the Border League, reigning champions Duns have made a good start to the defence of their title. For the first game against Teviotdale, Paul tried to assemble the championship team but Colin J stepped in for the unavailable John Hodge, with the other members being Colin M (s), George and Paul himself. A steady win of 10-4 was recorded.
For the second Border League game, against George's other club, Yester, who were last year's beaten finalists, George himself was unavailable and again Colin J stepped in. To their chagrin, Yester lost each of the first 5 ends. It would be fair to say that Yester did not enjoy much good luck during this period. Final score 6-3.
Despite having 6 players on the ice in the Laidlaw, Duns were well beaten by Ayton in the first round. Unfortunately Colin M and John W were playing in their Ayton colours (traitors) and they defeated a Duns rink of George, John H, Helen and David Oli. Another of the Ayton players was Duns reject Tony Betton who seems to be enjoying his curling again.
Finally the RCCC District medal. None of us were terribly clear what this competition was all about but George assembled a team of himself, Paul, David Oli and Colin J to inflict a bruising 15-2 win over Teviotdale. We are now the proud winners of the DM whatever that means.
After a shaky start from both team with Duns losing a 5 and Yester a 4 in the second and third ends respectively there followed a close fought game from which Duns emerged victorious in an extra end.
This is only the second time that Duns have won the Border League which is the ice rinks main annual competition. The last win was back in 1966.
Well done to all of the club members who took part in the competition throughout the year and to those who came along to support for the final.

I have just phoned the Ice Rink to confirm cancellation of our game on Friday evening and I've been advised that they have cancelled everything until Monday due to the severe weather.
It will be worth checking with the Ice Rink by phone 01573 224774 or going to their own web site before attempting to make it across for any scheduled games while this spell of seasonal white stuff is still with us.

Just a note to confirm that we have taken the decision to postpone the Winter league game that was due to take place this Friday at 9:15. This seems the sensible thing to do in view of the current weather conditions which don't show any sign of relenting. by making the decision now we are giving everyone, including the ice rink a reasonable period of notice. We will contact rink members to advise of the new time when it has been rearranged.
Here is the latest email received from Bill Cleghorn.
